Thoughts on the poetry, theory, and a poet by Alok Mishra

The world has moved far ahead of the Wordsworthian age. Now, you are not in a position to expect sheer romantic verses romancing with nature from a poet. In fact, even a versatile figure like T. S. Eliot seems out of the context in the present scenario. Why did the circumstances change? To be able to be in a position from where you can ponder about the current developments in English poetry, you have to think certain facts.

In the past, there used to be a parallel line that connected the creation and theory. By theory, I mean the literary theory of a particular age. Several instances are the neo-classical theory, romantic theory, and post-modern theory. For the clarity of thoughts, the romantic theory dominated later eighteenth and early nineteenth century. Poets were producing the works that moved along with it. Keats, Byron, Shelley, and others wrote great romantic poems. However, what is the theory that governs today's poetical canvas? Thinking from another side of the thread, what theory do the poets keep in mind when they compose? Apparently, there is no theory today! I remember to have read in a book of literary theory that the present age, in fact, is a no-theory age. Poets enjoy the liberty to write what suits them.

Getting into the debate to a further level, the social and cultural conditions, that are somehow disordered, add additional pain to the writing of poets. The question of any 'how,' if it arises at any level, may seek an answer in the poem by Harold Pinter - "Modern Love". The poem describes the absence of feeling from the act of love. Moreover, it also shows the disgust of poet for the soulless society.

There is a classic phrase that like gets like. The life of modern people has actually become lifeless. That, a poet is someone from the society is an inevitable truth! Now, what a poet will write will be the same that he feels and observes.

"The hollow eyes,

scrutinizes the hollow apartments

hiding the hollow men

inside."

What else can one expect from a poet? The seeds of this hollowness on the pages of poetry have the roots in ancient times. Matthew Arnold and his 'melancholy roar' depicts the story well. T. S. Eliot further protracted the story by adding his wrath in that roar. Today, the poets are in a quandary over what to write and what to avoid. They have much to write; they have much to avoid!

Re-Defining Literature and trying to establish what is Literature

Re-Defining Literature
Literature, in a weird sense, can be said to be a genuinely rendered sum total of someone’s sociological, psychological, philosophical, anthropological, historical, theosophical, ontological, scientific, and political sense. Now, that I say it, I have already asked for an apology that I might sound complicated. However, if one sits to frame literature within a certain framework, either he will run away pinching his hairs or he will not be able to digest something said by a Victorian figure after reading something by Terry Eagleton. That is why Literature needs a definition that can suit everyone's perception.
The definition that I have put forth is not a rash verdict. Moreover, nor is it a display of the little knowledge I have earned. The line that I speak of Literature has come to my mind after examining various works of Literature itself. Yet, I confirm that I find this definition lacking a lot! Let us assume a novelist writing a novel. Undoubtedly, he/she will take the inspiration from history; put a layer of the psychological, philosophical and sociological sense; give the resultant a certain political turn and if necessary, there is going to be a sort of theosophical polish! Nevertheless, it is never essential that we find all these in a literary piece. I remember a novel, Animal Farm. It does not give you anything else except the sarcastic political commentary and yes, the fun! The things that it lacks are theosophical sense and ontological sense, at the least. However, it is a piece of literature because it has a good number of elements as per the theory propagated above. Having said that, the conclusion that we arrive at is - we cannot give a 'proper' definition of Literature. Nevertheless, I think that I have tried something in this field...

Online Dating? Be Careful When You Date Someone Online. Sex Trap

Today, the world we live in has a lot to offer us. Anything you wish will come to you; there are drones to deliver the goods to your doorstep! About one of them, however, I am not sure. The concept of online dating is, was and perhaps will be a mystery for me forever.
A decade ago, you could see people frowning if someone initiated talks about blind dates. It has been left far behind now. Netizens are creating new milestones for them daily. Google can suggest your future partner in seconds; you can start dating with that 'searched' partner in no time. Thanks that Skype is there!
People with orthodox mind might find it a waste of time and resources. Youths, however, revel in these things. I do not criticize them for using the advanced technologies either. Nevertheless, I have to pose an interrogation mark next to their so-called 'online dating'.
What is the ultimate result one can extract from all these? I can assume the answers will mostly sound like 'nothing'. Then why do youths indulge in such futile activities?
I am worried when I see a girl of 15, living next to my door, staring at her mobile screen almost 10 hours in a day. Sometimes her expressions reflect happiness, sometimes sadness and most of the time confused! The dilemma is that if I lecture her about the side-effects of long hours of mobile use, it will make no sense at all to her. Moreover, people supporting the 'youth empowerment' might charge me of 'influencing one's mind'. Therefore, I remain a silent observer. (I am not sure how long I can keep my mouth shut!)
To me, online dating is a fallacy! It is a 'never-ending' dream literally. You cannot look the reality behind the curtain. The internet shows you what people allow it. Learning about the news of a girl running away with 'Facebook lover' and ultimately losing her life after being raped, pierces my heart. What can someone with 'orthodox' thoughts do? It seems the take-off of online dating has made people like myself outdated! One can understand if 'there is no country for old men', but what about someone just 24 and being disillusioned and worried?
I have an unsolicited advice for the youths. Sometimes the 'believe what you see' theory also does not work. How can you believe the written things that are 'editable'? Now, if it is all about the 'online pleasure', enjoy it and see how long it continues. I do not subscribe to this theory.

How to Study History of English Literature

Let us begin with the question itself, how to study English literature? Now, the question being put on page, read it once, twice, thrice and to n times until you see the first word in question being substituted with ‘why’. When you face the new question “why to study English literature” you actually are in the way to find answer to both, how and why! ‘Why’ is the question for the ends, and ‘how’ is the question for methods. Once you specify the ends, the methods will come into your mind systematically and you will start producing practical actions.
What I have said above, may seem clumsy to you. However, there lies the logical theory. You want to reach to the pond (buying light food in way, so that you can enjoy your evening there). There are three roads to the pond. You will simply go via the way having shops. I hope you have understood my point and logic.
However, students need proper guidance and detailed information about this serious question “how to study English literature”. In most cases, you do it out of your interest. You start your graduation in English literature because you find the contents (novels, poems, dramas etc.) interesting and even captivating if your imagination allows you. However, as the general practice among Indian students of English literature is, most of the students do not take interest in the most vital part of study! They do not give proper part of their attention to the History of English Literature. They ignore what can strengthen, empower and propel their understanding of various literary productions in English. Eventually, they become stooges to their academic calls; they do and think only as much as is required for their academic needs and examinations. They start understanding well the philosophy of The Waste Land without understanding since how long the water had been kept aside to make the land waste!
Now the question arises – how to bridge this gap of understanding? The answer is as simple as tough is the question! Make a bridge! Yes, you have to awaken an interest of going through good books of History of English Literature. The method, once my teacher told me, is to read as much as pleases you. Do not make the reading a burden upon your mind; if such happens, you will not be able to enjoy it! There must be a systematic study of the History, because History is a record of events in order… it is not the Science where you can understand laws of Einstein without understanding laws of Newton!  Therefore, it is strongly recommended that you, as the students of English literature, must go through a good book of History of English Literature at least twice. The reason behind this perusal is valid. It will make you aware of the various movements and waves in English Literature. You will start understanding the causes of arrival of Romantic revival in the 60s-70s of 18th century as well as the reason behind fading colours of romantic and naturalistic emotions in the mid nineteenth century. In simple words, History of English Literature lets you know how the poem that delights you, happened to exist on the pages of a poet. History of English Literature opens the window to you, through which you can see the process of creation! I will try to point out some methods and advantages of studying History of English Literature that will let you understand it as well as enjoy the reading without letting you feel any burden.

1-      There are certain chapters in the book of History of English Literature. You have to read the book completely at least twice. You have to read it in order. Thorough reading of the book will make you learn about different periods in the History of English Literature. You will have a perception about the ideology of a certain age/period of English Literature. This is necessary to understand the literary works in their context.
2-      When the initial reading (thorough reading) of a good book is complete, you can start going through other books of History of English Literature. You have now the idea of various periods and conditions of those periods, so you can read any specific age that you want. Reading viewpoints of different authors enables you to analyse various perspectives of a certain age in English Literature.
3-      Once you complete a chapter, find some works by writers of the age you just read. Read their works and try to find out the qualities you read about in the book. It will make you understand the context of works. For instance, you will come to know about the scenario, which compelled Dickens to write Oliver Twist.
4-      You can learn about various ways to interpret a literary work (especially, the poem). Let us assume you have just finished Victorian Period in English Literature. Now go through a work of Arnold entitled The Scholar-Gipsy. The contextual interpretation of work will guide you towards finding faults in Victorian England; while the broad and minute interpretation of poem will make you aware of the faults in general human nature, problems of entire world!
5-      A great advantage of studying History of English Literature is that you have an estimate of History of England as a nation.
6-      At last, if you study the History minutely and attentively, you do not need that extra hour to go through the background of any work you are reading. You just need to see author’s name or title of the work and you have context of the age in your mind ready!

SOME GOOD BOOKS RECOMMENDED:
1.      History of English Literature by Legouis and Cazamian.
2.      A Critical History of English Literature (Vol – I & II) by David Daiches.
3.      An Introduction to the Study of English Literature by W. H. Hudson.
4.      The Palgrave Guide to English Literature and Its Contexts by Peter Widdowson.
5.      The Short Oxford History of English Literature by Andrew Sanders.
6.      A Brief History of English Literature by John Peck and Martin Coyle.
7.      Studying English Literature (A Practical Guide) by Tory Young.

There are many good books; and, in fact, all books are good in a way! Hope this article helps you in understanding the importance of studying History of English Literature.
